As the two wolves made their way back outside, Sakura stopped and glanced up at the sky, noticing the moon rays cutting through the night clouds.

“Denver, do you know how Staine got his powers?”

Denver stopped next to her. “What do you mean?”

“I always wondered why my fur glows—where does it fit in with wolf history about Moonlight Walkers getting the ability to illuminate? It doesn’t seem to have a purpose except making us stand out in the night.”

Sakura looked down at her forepaws.

“Oh, Sakura, there is nothing wrong with your fur. I think it’s beautiful and I’m not the only one to think that.”

Sakura tried to smile.

Denver nodded. “There are a lot of history books in the kingdom. Though, strangely enough, there isn’t a lot pertaining to Staine—about his bloodline before him, where he gained his powers, and how he became a Guardian. It’s almost like one day he just popped up and everyone went along with it. I feel like there’s a chunk of our history missing, too, just like how Orion tried to hide his existence.”

Sakura tried to read his expression as he looked at the crowd before them. She followed his gaze, looking through the crowd of fur, now able to make out the other Moonlight Walkers as their fur would give way to glowing sparks of light. And as Sakura stepped directly into the moonlight, her fur began to illuminate as well. Denver smiled at her as the two walked side by side.

“You are so beautiful, Sakura. I’m happy that you’re here,” Denver whispered to her.

“Me too,” Sakura replied as she rubbed the side of Denver’s neck with her face.

As they seated themselves to dine, Sakura was able to get a better look at a few nearby Moonlight Walkers. Even though they were glowing like her, she could see that they had ordinary light-yellow eyes.

He was right, Sakura thought. I’m the only one with green eyes. But why?

They both ate and chatted with the other wolves for the next few hours. Sakura followed Denver around as he consulted with the elders about suggestions that were mentioned for city improvements. He had a vast knowledge of the history of the palace as well as keeping order in the city. One by one, the guests retreated home as it grew late. Mordecai soon said farewell to the remaining guests as he retired to his quarters. Denver was left to escort Sakura to her room.

“Today was wonderful,” Sakura said to him outside her door. She hid a yawn with her left forepaw.

Denver wagged his tail in response. “We will see each other tomorrow and talk further,” he promised. “I want to show you more of the palace and the city.”

“I would love that,” Sakura replied.

“It’s a date then.” Denver winked. “Goodnight, Princess,” he bowed to her, then left.

“Goodnight,” Sakura replied before closing the door.

Quickly, Sakura slipped out of her dress and jumped onto her straw bed. Wow, he is so nice, she thought to herself as Denver’s smile came to mind.
